Surviving Apocalypse by Seeking Refuge in a Grocery Store
If you can think back to a time when you were a young child you might remember thinking about what it might be like if you were left in a toy store, or the candy aisle of a grocery store all by yourself. Without any adults around to say “no” to every one of your requests, you might finally be able to have a bit of fun. While this is all fine and good to ponder, a few people recently put their heads together to figure out just how long a single person would be able to survive in a grocery store if they were unable to leave nor receive additional supplies.
Dr. Lewis Dartnell set out to find out just how feasible long-term survival within the confines of a grocery store is. When it came down to it, it really seems as though being stranded in a grocery store during an apocalyptic event might be the best place to be. In his research, Dartnell came to the conclusion that an average grocery store contains enough food and supplies to keep a single adult fed, watered, and in good health for more than half of a century. Even without electricity to keep meats cold/frozen, the average store had enough non-perishable goods to keep a single person going for an extended period of time.
Of course, there is no need to live our lives under the assumption that an apocalypse is just waiting to happen, but it is nice to know that there is hope if one of these events does happen to play out. Dartnell’s small thought project also illustrates just how useful having supplies on hand at your own home can be. Though you may not be able to story enough supplies and food to survive more than half a century, it is never a bad idea to keep a food cache sitting around such that you might be able to survive a few weeks without having to venture into the outside world. At the center of Dartnell’s research is determining just how readily society would be able to survive a life-altering event such as a nuclear war, unexpected shift in weather, or anything else similar. Even if you choose to remain unprepared, the least you can do is map out the fastest route to your nearest grocery store, though after this you likely will not be the only person with this in mind.
