Welcome to the Living Rational Disaster Preparedness Guide. On this page we’ll go over the best ways to prepare yourself and your family for natural disasters including earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and more. Below you can view complete checklists, resources and general information on preparedness for each type of natural disaster.
Planning for Disasters & Emergencies
Before properly planning for an emergency such as a natural disaster, you should first know which scenarios are most likely to affect the area in which you live and/or work. By narrowing down which scenarios are most likely to affect your area, you can become much better prepared for dealing with them. Depending on the region of the United States you live in, you might have to prepare for multiple types of natural disasters or just a single one.
If you live in an area where several different types of natural disasters are possible, preparedness becomes even more important. It may seem like a daunting task, but preparing for an emergency isn’t as time consuming or difficult as it appears. Once you make a plan, you will have it available for years to come.
Though the government has several agencies for dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters, it can sometimes take a few days for them to reach everyone that was affected. Furthermore, many disasters will leave local food and water sources such as supermarkets offline if power goes down, or if there is a large spike in demand. In scenarios like these, having the proper supplies on hand can go a long way in helping you make it through tough times.
Supplies to Have On Hand for Natural Disasters
While your emergency plan will vary slightly depending on the type of natural disaster you’re preparing for, the same types of supplies are generally recommended to have on hand through multiple scenarios. Things like food, water and heat sources are all essential for survival, no matter the scenario at hand. As such having an Emergency Food Supply, clean drinking water, and a way of cooking the food can play a big role in surviving the aftermath of natural disasters.
Aside from buying survival food and supplies separately, you can also purchase a complete, comprehensive Emergency Kit which include all of these essentials and are packaged in easy to carry duffle bags, backpacks or buckets. These types of items are convenient in that they will provide you with all of the supplies you need in an emergency in one shot and are very cost-effective. Our complete emergency kits can often last for years, making them one of the most popular options.
Alternatively, you can also buy many of these supplies locally and piece together your own emergency kit. When doing so, there are several types of items that are essential to making your own emergency kit. Below we have outlined some of the most common, and also essential, supplies which should be included in any legitimate survival kit.
Food & Water for Emergencies
When you begin piecing together a survival kit for an emergency, two of the most necessary items are food and water. Food and water are arguably the single most important aspects of a survival kit, as they are necessary for survival. When looking for the proper types of water and food for your kit, you should keep in mind the shelf life.
For example, if you purchase standard store-bought foods, it would mean that it would have to be replaced every few weeks. This obviously is not practical, so some popular emergency food supplies include 2400 and 3600 calorie food bars, or freeze dried emergency food. These types of foods are designed to last much longer, and depending on the manufacturer will have a shelf life of anywhere from 5 to 25 years, making them ideal to keep on hand for emergencies.
Choosing the correct quantity will depend on how long you plan on being without a reliable food source in an emergency. If you choose freeze dried food for your kit, you should also consider how you will cook these meals without power. You can do so with supplies like portable stoves or a fire. When it comes to emergency water supplies, you should also keep in mind shelf life and the amount of time it will be needed for.
Radios, Flashlights & Communication
In an emergency or a natural disaster caused by things like severe weather or geological forces, having the proper tools to receive weather reports, news updates and similar information can also be essential. As such, having a weather band radio, am/fm radio or a way of signaling for help if needed can play a big role in safely making it out of the affected area. Aside from the obvious supplies (like a radio), you may want to keep things like a help flag, survival whistle, or signaling mirror on hand. Other important supplies include flashlights or lanterns, which can help you signal for help as well as complete tasks in the dark.
Maintaining Sanitary Conditions
In an emergency, you may not have access to basic hygiene supplies like soap, toothpaste, shaving cream or even running water. In scenarios such as these, maintaining your personal hygiene can play a big role in not only preventing disease and infection, but can also give you some sense of normalcy. On top of the supplies mentioned above, you may also want to think about how you will handle human waste with things like waste bags, toilet paper and similar items.
Staying Warm & Dry
Depending on the scenario you’re preparing for, keeping your body warm and out of the elements can also be a major variable. This will obviously depend on the region you live in, but supplies like body warmers, emergency blankets and a fuel source can all provide heat in cold conditions. Other items like a survival poncho or tube tent can help shelter you from the elements and keep you dry in wet conditions.
Survival Knives & Tools
One of the last types of supplies we’ll talk about are survival knives and multi-purpose tools. These types of items can be essential, in that their uses are almost limitless in a survival scenario. They can help you complete important daily tasks such as building a shelter, cooking and even making additional tools from what nature has to provide.
