In recent history, it seems as though we cannot go one week without hearing something regarding gun violence or gun laws. With all of the shootings and senseless killings happening across the country, there are more than just a few people who see the need for change. Governor Cuomo, of New York, is on the front lines of gun violence seeing as his city is one of the worst when it comes to armed crime.
Lax Gun Laws to Blame
In a press conference earlier this week, Cuomo told Harlem citizens that, “The cruel irony here is that we passed the toughest gun control law in the country here in New York.” Cuomo was referencing an earlier bit of legislation called the SAFE Act, which requires registration on all firearms and the banning of assault rifles. This act also expanded background checks to make it more difficult for certain types of people to acquire weapons. Despite his efforts, gun violence in New York has not seen as drastic a decrease as was hoped for.
In fact, gun violence in New York City this year has skyrocketed, and Cuomo is blaming the South. In a statement, he said, “As long as you can get a gun from some state down south, put it in a trunk and drive it up, it’s gonna get into this state, and that’s what’s happening.” Though Cuomo did not offer any hard statistics to back up his claim, he does seem to have a point.
Gun laws in southern states such as Alabama and Georgia are some of the most lax in the nation, and it is not so unfathomable to think that someone who wants a gun will make the journey to acquire it. This is especially true if New York is only making it more difficult for their citizens to acquire weapons.
Even though Cuomo is blaming the south for the increase in gun violence, he still plans on implementing tighter gun laws in order to help, or try to, cut down on gun violence. This country seems to be facing an epidemic at present, and the violence only seems to be getting worse with each passing week. There is no saying how many tragedies it is going to take in order for this country to make a concerted effort to cut down on the senseless gun violence.
